Most people who search for how to increase TikTok followers want one of two things. Some want a stream of strangers who enjoy their videos and come back for more. Others want an account that looks established to a first-time visitor. Both goals are reachable, and they depend on different levers.
This guide covers eight steps in the order we suggest doing them. Six are organic work that you control. Step 7 is optional assisted growth, such as TikTok's Promote tool, creator partnerships or services from an SMM panel, and we explain what each one can and cannot do. Step 8 shows how to measure the result.
The short answer: People follow a TikTok account when one video makes them want more of the same. Pick a narrow topic, set up a clear profile, open each video with a reason to keep watching, and publish on a steady rhythm. Make your videos easy to find through search keywords, and borrow audiences through duets and collaborations. Add assisted growth only after the basics work, and start with a small test. Judge progress by rates such as new followers per 1,000 views, not by the follower total alone.
Key takeaways
- TikTok shows videos to people who do not follow you, so growth comes from videos that make a stranger want more of the same.
- TikTok says user interactions, which can include watch time, usually carry the most weight in the For You feed.
- Buffer's study of 11.4 million posts links 2 to 5 posts per week to the biggest gain in views per post, but it measures views, not followers.
- Purchased followers raise your count and social proof, but they do not watch your videos, so they work as support next to real content.
- Track follow conversion (new followers per 1,000 views) and retention in TikTok Studio, and test one change at a time.
How to increase TikTok followers starts with a reason to follow
A follower is a standing request to see more of your work. A viewer gives that request only after a video has made a promise: this account will keep delivering something I want. Everything in this guide is a way to make that promise clear, repeat it, and put it in front of the right people.
Decide which promise you are making before you choose tactics. A reason to follow usually has three parts:
- A topic promise. One subject or one type of help that viewers can name in a few words.
- Proof. Evidence in the video that you know the subject, such as a result, a demonstration or a clear explanation.
- A repeatable format. A structure that viewers recognize, so they know what the next video will look like.
The follower count still matters as a signal to visitors. An academic survey of 500 influencers, published in the journal Information in 2025, did not test audiences directly. Its literature review does summarize earlier work suggesting that large follower counts raise perceived influence, and that unusual ratios between likes and followers can lower perceived credibility. Treat that as context, not proof, because the study itself looked at how influencers check information.
Set realistic expectations too. Socialinsider's 2026 benchmarks cover about 40.7 million videos from brand accounts with 1,000 to 1 million followers. They report slower average follower growth in every size bracket in 2025 than in 2024. These are averages for brand accounts, so they describe a trend rather than your timeline. The practical lesson is that growth now rewards clarity and consistency over luck.
Before you start: set up a profile worth following
A visitor decides in a few seconds. Your profile has to answer three questions fast: what is this account about, who is it for, and why should I follow it?
Start with the name and username. Choose words people could type into the search bar, and put your topic in the name field. Write the bio as one plain sentence that states who you help and what they get. Add a profile photo that stays recognizable at a small size, and pin two or three of your clearest videos so a new visitor sees your strongest proof first.
Then check the account type. TikTok's help pages describe a General account, a Verified Business account and an Organization account. Most creators use a General account. Anyone whose main goal is promoting a product or service should use a Verified Business account, which comes with marketing tools. Verification is a separate process.
Two limits are worth knowing in advance. A General account needs at least 1,000 followers to add a website link to the profile. TikTok Studio analytics need at least one public post.
- Name and username contain words people would search for
- The bio states who you help and what they get, in one sentence
- The profile photo is clear at a small size
- Two or three strong videos are pinned
- The account is public, with at least one public post
- You know when the website link unlocks (1,000 followers on a General account)
The graphic below sums up the same checks on one card.
Step 1: Understand how the For You feed finds new viewers
The For You feed shows each person a personal selection of videos, and it does not depend on whether they follow you. That is the main reason a small account can reach a large audience on TikTok.
TikTok groups the inputs into three buckets. User interactions include what a person likes, shares, comments on, watches in full or skips. Content information includes sounds, hashtags, the number of video views and the country where the video was published. User information includes language, location, time zone and device settings. TikTok adds that for most users, interactions, which may include time spent watching, are generally weighted more heavily than the other groups.
TikTok also says the system tries to introduce people to new creators and usually does not recommend videos a person has already seen.
Many guides add exact weights, completion thresholds and test-batch sizes. TikTok does not publish those. Buffer's algorithm guide says plainly that TikTok has not confirmed a points system, and an agency guide from Darkroom admits that its thresholds come from unnamed third-party analyses. A sensible reading is that a video is tried on a small group and shown to more people if that group responds well, but the exact mechanics are not public.
Two points follow from this for you. First, the viewer's behavior on each video matters more than your follower total, so every video has to earn its audience. Second, a follow happens at the end of a good viewing experience. The next two steps are about creating that experience.
Step 2: Make videos that earn follows
A video earns a follow when it gives a viewer a clear reason to see the next one. Aim for one idea per video, delivered quickly, in a format you can repeat.
Open with the point. The first seconds decide whether a stranger keeps watching, and TikTok names time spent watching as one of the interactions it can weigh most. State the problem, show the result or ask the question in the first line, then deliver the answer without a long introduction. TikTok Studio reports retention rate, which is the share of the video that viewers watched, and it lets you find the exact moment when people leave. Use those drop-off points as your edit notes for the next video.
Tip: test the hook, not the whole video
Make two versions of the first three seconds for the same idea. Post them on different days and compare retention and average watch time in TikTok Studio. A small test like this teaches you more than changing everything at once.
Repeatable formats matter because they turn one good video into a reason to follow. A series, a weekly question or a recurring "problem, fix, result" structure tells a viewer what they will get if they come back. Entrepreneur's first-person account from the founders of a marketing agency makes the same point: pick one topic, stay with it, and study why certain videos worked before copying the pattern. That account is self-reported, so use it as a practitioner's view rather than evidence.
Keep the content honest and original. TikTok's integrity policy names low-effort material as not eligible for the For You feed. Examples are clips built only from GIFs and clips that carry another creator's watermark. It also asks creators to label realistic AI-generated or heavily edited content.
Step 3: Make your videos easy to find
TikTok is also a search engine, and search works differently from the For You feed. TikTok says that for search, how well a video matches the query is generally weighted more heavily than other factors, with hashtags and the sound used also playing a part.
So write for the person who types a question. Put the main phrase near the start of the caption in natural wording. Show the same phrase as on-screen text early in the video, and say it aloud. SEO Sherpa's 2026 guide describes this same set of places, captions, on-screen text and speech, as the signals a video's topic is read from. TikTok's own pages do not rank those places, so treat the advice as practitioner guidance.
For hashtags, use a small number that describes the video, for example 3 to 5, mixing one broad tag with niche ones. Hashtags help TikTok place a video, but misleading tags can hurt long-term reach, according to SEO Sherpa's guide. A trending sound can help when it fits the idea, and it does nothing when it does not.
For keyword ideas, type your topic into the TikTok search bar and note the suggestions, then check which phrases viewers use in comments. Business and creator accounts can also use TikTok's Creative Center for keyword insights, as the SEO Sherpa guide points out. Build your next five videos around the phrases you find.
Step 4: Post on a steady rhythm
Post often enough that viewers see you regularly, and keep the rhythm sustainable. The strongest evidence we found points to 2 to 5 posts per week as the point where extra effort pays off most.
That evidence comes from Buffer. In October 2025 it analyzed 11.4 million TikTok posts from more than 150,000 accounts, using a method that compares each account with its own history. Compared with one post per week, accounts posting 2 to 5 times per week got up to 17% more views per post. At 6 to 10 posts the figure was 29%, and at 11 or more it was 34%.
| Posts per week | Median views per post | Top 10% of posts (90th percentile) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 489 | 3,722 |
| 2 to 5 | 506 | 6,983 |
| 6 to 10 | 487 | 10,092 |
| 11 or more | 459 | 14,401 |
The table shows what is happening. The typical post barely changes, while the top posts get much bigger. Buffer's data scientist describes it as raising the ceiling, not the floor: more posts mean more chances that one of them takes off.
Note: what the study measures
Buffer measured views, not follower growth. Its accounts come from Buffer's own users, who may lean toward small and medium businesses, and the data covers about one year, so the pattern may change. The method also shows a link between posting more and getting more views, not proof of cause.
Other sources use different measures, so do not mix them. Socialinsider reports that brand accounts posted about 8 to 23 videos per month in 2025, depending on size. Dash Social reports about 8 posts per week for brands. Both describe what brands do, not what works. Some guides recommend one to three posts a day without citing a source.
Consistency matters more than volume. A creator with about 1.5 million followers told The Markup in 2021 that his views dropped after a three-day break and took weeks to recover, and he could not say why. That is anecdotal and several years old, but it matches the advice in Entrepreneur's account never to skip a week. Start with the number you can keep up for three months, and raise it only when quality holds.
Step 5: Borrow audiences with duets, stitches, collabs and LIVE
Another creator's audience can introduce you to people who already like your topic. TikTok gives you a few built-in ways to reach it.
A duet places your video next to another creator's video in a split screen, and it appears on your profile, not theirs. Stitch, the related format, has its own privacy setting. Both depend on the original creator's settings, because a person needs a public account and the feature turned on before others can use it. Pick videos from creators in your niche, and add something the original does not say.
Creator collaborations work when the audiences overlap but the content does not compete. A short joint video, a reply series or a guest appearance gives viewers a reason to check your profile. Keep the arrangement clear and lightweight so it can repeat.
LIVE is a later step. TikTok's help pages set two entry conditions for going LIVE: you must be 18 or older, and your account needs 1,000 followers. The follower rule may vary by region. For the LIVE feed, TikTok lists watch time, gifts sent and the creator's number of followers among its signals. Treat LIVE as a way to deepen a community you have already started.
Finally, mention your TikTok handle where your audience already is: your website, newsletter or other social channels. Tailor the post to each channel, and send people to a specific video, not just a profile.
Step 6: Turn viewers into a community
People follow accounts where someone responds. Replies, questions and recurring formats make a viewer feel part of something, which raises the chance they return.
Reply to comments in the first hours after posting, and turn good questions into your next videos. Commenting on videos in your niche can also bring visitors to your profile. A creator on the Wear It OUT blog credits this habit for part of her early growth. Treat it with care: the post dates from 2020, it is anecdotal and it shows no follower data.
Be careful with trend-chasing. Some guides tell you to jump on every trend. Others, including the creators quoted by The Markup, found constant trend-chasing exhausting and not always rewarding. A reasonable middle path is to use a trend only when it fits your topic promise, and to add your own angle when you do.
Avoid follow-for-follow requests. TikTok's integrity policy says content that tries to manipulate people into inflating likes or follows is not eligible for the For You feed. A follower who joined for a swap often never watches your videos, which weakens the signals you rely on.
Step 7: Add assisted growth with Promote, creators and SMM panels
Assisted growth means paying for part of the push. Each option buys something different, and none replaces steps 1 to 6.
Promote and Spark Ads
TikTok's own paid tools turn organic posts into ads. Promote is an in-app tool for boosting videos and LIVE sessions. Its goals include more video views, followers and profile views. You can choose a ready-made pack, where the budget, length and audience are already set, or design your own promotion. You must be at least 18, and promoting a LIVE needs 1,000 followers.
Spark Ads, set up in TikTok Ads Manager, boost posts from your own account or from other creators who authorize them. Engagement from the ad, including follows, counts toward the original post. TikTok tracks follows within one day of someone seeing the ad as paid followers.
The practical rule is to promote a video that already holds attention. Our post SMM Panel vs. Meta Ads compares paid ads and panels in more detail.
Creator partnerships
A creator whose audience matches yours can introduce you to people who trust their taste. The limit is control. You pay for an introduction, and what happens next depends on your profile and your next videos, which is why steps 1 to 3 come first.
How an SMM panel order works
An SMM panel is a website where you buy social media services, such as followers, likes and views, from one prepaid balance. On SMMService, you sign up, browse the catalog, choose a service and a quantity, and add funds. Deposits run through an automated system, and the minimum deposit is $1 as of October 2026. Orders go to the server as soon as you place them.
For TikTok, you never share a password or account credentials. You provide only your public profile link or username. The account must stay public. Do not change the username while an order is in progress or right after it completes, because the change affects tracking and refill eligibility.
SMMService describes its TikTok catalog like this:
- followers, likes, views, shares, saves and custom comments
- LIVE stream views, LIVE stream likes and points for PK battles, the head-to-head LIVE matches
- sponsored-promotion services that aim to bring likes, views and followers
- country-targeted options
- other delivery types, including phone-farm deliveries and task-based or micro-task services routed through peer-to-peer servers
Browse the current list and rates on the services page.
What purchased followers can and cannot do
This section is our analysis, based on how TikTok describes its signals. The For You feed responds to what real viewers do with your videos: watching, finishing, replaying, liking, commenting and sharing. A purchased follower raises your count at once and adds to social proof, but the follower does not watch your videos in the way a viewer would. On its own, a follower service therefore does not change how far TikTok shows your next video.
Warning: a higher count is not higher reach
If your follower count rises and your views per video stay flat, your follow rate falls. Plan to raise the quality of your videos at the same time, and judge any order by the scorecard in Step 8.
That is why SMMService offers more than followers. Likes, views, shares and saves support the content that people see after they arrive on your profile. SMMService's view is that brands, influencers and public figures who combine organic content with engagement services see their visibility, publicity and social proof gain traction. The content gives people a reason to stay, and the services give new visitors a reason to trust.
Choose quality and pace
Quality tiers differ in how well the delivered numbers hold over time. SMMService states in each service's title and description whether it is drop or non-drop, and the refill window appears in the name or description, for example 30 Days Refill. The same labeling and refill rules apply to TikTok services as to our other platforms.
We accept refill requests starting 24 hours after an order completes. If a refill cannot be completed, the undelivered volume is credited back as a partial refund. Our post Non-Drop vs Drop SMM Services explains the labels. Outside certain specialized delivery setups, no panel can honestly promise permanent retention, because platform filters and algorithms change.
Pace is the second choice. Drip-feed delivery, where an order is released in portions over time, is available on some services. When a service supports it, you set the delivery speed and intervals yourself, as on our other platforms. A steady curve is also easier to explain if a brand partner checks your growth history, so choose the pace that fits the story you want your account to tell.
Use the table below to match each option to a situation.
| Option | Choose it when | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Organic work only | You have time and no urgent deadline | Slowest way to build social proof |
| Promote or Spark Ads | A video already holds attention and you want it in front of new viewers | Reach stops when the budget stops |
| Creator partnerships | A partner's audience matches yours | You depend on the partner's audience and format |
| SMM panel services | You need social proof or engagement to support content you already publish | They add numbers, not new viewers who watch |
Run a small first test
If you have never used a panel, test before you commit. Our advice is to order the minimum quantity of several different services and compare how each performs.
- Finish steps 1 to 4. A clear profile and a few posts make any result easier to judge.
- Create an account and add funds. The sign-up page takes you through it.
- Read each service title and description. Look for drop or non-drop, the refill window and any setup instruction.
- Order the minimum quantity of two or three different services, using your public link or username.
- Leave the username unchanged while the orders run and after they finish.
- Compare results over several days: delivery, how the numbers hold and how your profile looks.
- Keep what works and drop the rest. Scale only the services that fit your goal.
If you would rather test with a free balance before depositing, contact our support team through the ticket system or on Telegram. Our guide to why people use SMM panels covers when this approach fits and when it does not.
Step 8: Measure and adjust
Measure rates, not only counts. A follower total says where you are, while rates show whether your videos are working.
TikTok Studio, which you reach from your profile menu, gives you the data. The Overview tab shows post views, profile views, likes, comments, shares and where viewers found you, including search queries. The Content tab ranks your top posts and shows which ones brought new viewers and new followers. For each video you can read retention rate, average watch time and the share of viewers who watched the full video. Date ranges run from 7 days to 365 days.
Turn those numbers into a small scorecard and review it every week.
| Metric | How to calculate it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Follow conversion | New followers ÷ views × 1,000 | Whether viewers want more after watching |
| Profile visit rate | Profile views ÷ post views | Whether the video makes people curious about you |
| Retention | Average watch time ÷ video length | Whether the opening and the pace hold attention |
| Engagement per view | Total reactions (likes, comments, shares and saves) ÷ views | Whether the video sparks reactions |
Benchmarks help only when the definition matches yours. Socialinsider's 2026 report puts average engagement by views at roughly 3.75% to 4.4% for brand accounts with 1,000 to 1 million followers. Dash Social reports about 3.9% by views and about 4.2% by followers. The two reports use different samples and unclear definitions in places, so use them as a rough range and compare your own trend month to month.
When the numbers move, change one thing at a time. The plan below fits one month.
- Week 1: set up and baseline. Finish the profile checklist, post your first 2 to 5 videos and record your starting rates.
- Week 2: test the hook. Make two versions of the opening for the same idea and compare retention.
- Week 3: add search and one collaboration. Use keyword phrases in captions and on-screen text, and make one duet or stitch.
- Week 4: review and decide. Keep the formats with the highest follow conversion, and decide whether a small paid test fits your goal.
Common mistakes and myths
Most stalled accounts repeat the same few mistakes. Check this list before you change your strategy.
- Mixing unrelated topics. Viewers cannot tell what they would get by following, so they do not.
- Judging by the follower count. Rates tell you what to fix. The total only tells you where you are.
- Chasing every trend. Use trends that fit your promise, and skip the rest.
- Treating shadowbans as the default explanation. Many creators believe TikTok quietly hides accounts, but The Markup's reporting calls it widely believed and unproven. Check retention and hooks first.
- Buying before the content is ready. A service adds numbers, not a reason to follow.
- Expecting followers to equal sales. Followers are one step. Offers and links do the converting.
- Changing too much at once. You cannot tell what worked.
Frequently asked questions
How many followers do I need to go LIVE on TikTok?
TikTok sets the entry point at age 18 and 1,000 followers, and notes that the follower figure may differ by region. Open the LIVE option in your own app to see whether it is available to you.
How often should I post?
Buffer's study suggests 2 to 5 posts per week as a starting point. The biggest gain in views per post comes when you move from one post a week to that range. Pick a rhythm you can keep, and raise it only if quality holds.
Do hashtags still matter?
They help TikTok place a video, but search keywords in the caption, on-screen text and speech do more of the work. Use a few relevant hashtags, for example 3 to 5, and avoid misleading ones.
Why do my followers drop?
Followers leave when a video no longer matches the promise that earned the follow, or when a service that delivered them does not hold its numbers. Check your recent videos against your topic promise. If you use a service, check whether it is labeled drop or non-drop and what the refill window is.
Do I need a Business account?
Not for most creators. A General account gives you analytics and Promote. A Verified Business account fits people whose main goal is promoting a product or service and who want TikTok's business tools.
Can I try an order before depositing much?
Yes. The minimum deposit is $1 as of October 2026, and you can also ask our support team for a free test balance through the ticket system or on Telegram.
In short
Give people a clear reason to follow, set up the profile, open videos with the point, make them searchable and post on a rhythm you can keep. Borrow audiences through duets and collaborations, reply to your community, and measure with rates. Add assisted growth as a small, tested layer on top.
Next step: build the base, then test one lever
Growing on TikTok is a system, not a single trick. The organic steps build the audience that stays, and assisted growth, used with care, adds social proof and engagement to videos that already deserve attention.
When you are ready to test, create your SMMService account, order the minimum quantity of a few services and compare the results. You can see the full list of TikTok options on the services page. If you want a free test balance first, reach our support team on Telegram. If you also grow on Instagram, our guide on how to increase Instagram followers follows the same approach.
